G.Y.M. Seminar: Collective Investing

Taking advantage of the muscle instead of doing your own hustle is essense of collective investing. By pooling of resources, one gets and should get benefits that one will not get if one stands or invests alone. BAKAS is a common term and action among Filipinos similar to BAYANIHAN. In personal investing; BAKAS or BAYANIHAN or pooling; collective investing is almost but a must.

Wealth-filled Messages from the “Pera Mo, Palaguin Mo” Workshop

by: Francisco J. Colayco

Last Saturday, the Colayco Foundation team and I held a “Pera Mo, Palaguin Mo” Workshop to almost 100 people at the Development Academy of the Philippines Building in Pasig City. I was astounded with the number of people in attendance. Even if it was a Saturday, they took the opportunity to start taking charge of their personal finance. It was an exhausting day for us. Nevertheless, it was fulfilling for us to see so many people learning and enjoying from the workshop.

After the event, we received some personal messages from our participants. I would like to share some of their thoughts with you.

Here are other letters from our participants:

It always makes us happy to be able to ignite a spark of change in our participant’s lives. I always said that becoming wealthy is an obligation to everyone. If you are wealthy, you will not just be able to help yourself better. You will be able to contribute more to your family, community, and country.

I hope you will join us in our financial seminars. For the schedule of our upcoming seminars, please visit www.colaycofoundation.com!

Beware of Card Skimming

by: Art Ladaga

Few days ago, news got out about a woman who lost her retirement fund of P400,000 from her ATM account. For 31 years, she worked hard to earn and save that amount. Investigation revealed that her bank account details were obtained without her knowing it. Apparently, someone installed a device in the ATM machine she used and copied her card’s details (for more details of the story, click here).

The woman was one of the victims of card skimming, a dubious practice where criminals install a device within an ATM machine to obtain card details of ATM holders. Most of the victims are those who have a big amount of money in their ATM accounts. In just a blink of an eye, they can lose everything they had worked for.

We at the Colayco Foundation would like to remind everyone NEVER to have a big amount of money in your ATM account. It’s important to spread your money in different investments. Mr. Armand Bengco, the foundation’s Executive Director, recommends having only an amount up to P5,000 in your ATM card, especially if it’s your payroll account. Life savings (if one already has it) should be placed somewhere safer like a time-deposit account.  Putting it in an ATM account is highly vulnerable to ATM skimming.

When handling your ATM card, you must always exercise caution. Here’s an infographic from Inquirer.net on how to protect yourself against card skimming:

There’s a deep truth in the saying “Prevention is better than cure.” And this is highly applicable in personal finance. If you do not exercise it, then you risk losing the wealth you worked hard to achieve.

“Nang Magising si Juan” Season Ender

The first season of Nang Magising si Juan ended last Aug. 10.  Look out for announcements on the second season by late August or early September.  Ariel went to Hong Kong with the CFE Team to attend an orientation of members of KsKCoop.  He had such a great time with them and Ariel realized how much sacrifices the OFWs in Hong Kong have been enduring through the years.

Ariel got a little emotional at end of the KSK Coop Orientation Seminar — with the following realization:’Na-realize ko, kung ito ngang mga kababayan natin — naghihirap at nagtitiyaga dito sa ibang bansa, malayo sa kanilang mga pamilya — ay kayang ayusin at harapin ang kanilang mga problemang pinansiyal, ako pa kaya na nasa sarili kong bansa at may maayos na trabaho. Nagising ako…

“Nang Magising si Juan” Episode 13 Sneak Peek

While there are some improvements in Ariel’s financial education on Nang Magising Si Juan, there is still a lot to ask for.  In last week’s episode, Ariel ended up staying in a hotel because his electricity, water and telephone were cut off because he was unable to pay his bills.  Ariel is not as poor as not to find money for his electricity but he is not careful.  He forgot to pay the bills because he was too busy.  I had to remind Ariel that he can pay for his bills even by cellphone. Now he has to use his credit card to pay for his hotel bill and that adds up to his expenses.  Ariel didn’t even realize he was staying in aurumOne Makati Hotel that I own together with OFWs and members of KsKCoop.

At least, he remembered that he had to arrange for an interview with Ms. Yasly Corazon Jaen, Chief Admin Officer of Governance Commission for GOCC of LandBank Mobile Availer.  He learned that it is easy to get a salary loan. When you avail of a loan, you should have a mobile phone because you apply by text and you get the approval also by text within three days and the money is deposited to your account with Land Bank.

Tomorrow Aug. 10, watch the Ariel and the members of KsKCoop as they meet up in Hong Kong to discuss the projects of KsK.  We have sponsors for the show like Bulgar, Bounty Fresh Chicken Chooks-to-Go, Mang Inasal and LandBank of the Philippines.  With them, we are able to give all Filipinos information while watching an enjoyable comedy show.  Please pass the word to your family and friends.

“Nang Magising si Juan” Episode 12 Sneak Peek

Ariel, in Nang Magising si Juan last July 27, continues to believe that his real talent is in show business.  He looks for ways and means to support his feeling and he joins the Chooks-to-go caravan.  This is actually a good move on his part to understand his real passion.  This is what we should all do to really discover if what we believe to be our capability is really true.

In joining the caravan, Ariel got himself into the groove of all the fun that Chooks-to-go caravan had to offer.  He went to the extent of being personally involved in the activities, which was again very good to enlighten him. He was convinced that it was really his calling to be in the limelight and he made up his mind that he would be a good endorser of Chooks to go.

He thought he should resign from his job with Feeling Close with FJCshow and maybe even his job with PLDT.  He went to me first to resign and tell me about his plans. I was surprised and kept asking him if he already had a signed contract.  He was evasive and didn’t really confirm, but he was so sure he wanted to resign, so I accepted.

When Ariel went back to Chooks-to-go, he was shocked to learn that they already had a poster of their endorser.  He didn’t even know!

Tomorrow, Aug 3 at 8am on GMA News TV, join Ariel again when he is seriously unable to pay his bills.  On Nang Magising Si Juan, learn more about possible solutions especially regarding the mobile salary option of Land Bank.

Catch Nang Magising si Juan this Sunday, 8:00 am, at GMA News TV!

Nang Magising si Juan would like to thank its sponsors Bulgar, Bounty Fresh Chicken Chooks-to-Go, Mang Inasal and LandBank of the Philippines. With them, we are able to give all Filipinos information while watching an enjoyable comedy show.

BEWARE OF THE LATEST SCAM

by: Art Ladaga

A few hours ago, a man named Peter Jay Abrico who pretended to be linked to a certain government institution, solicited money from them, promising to return their money TWO TIMES ITS WORTH a few days after. In some cases, Abrico also gave extra items like a television and a pajero! Investors became suspicious when most of them complained that they were not able to get their money back afterwards. Eventually, Abrico was captured in Makati.

Scams like this are very rampant. There are still those who fall prey to these false opportunities for a chance to “get rich quick.” Sadly, the only ones who get rich quick in these cases are the scammers. On the other hand, the victims are left deeply traumatized for giving away a huge amount of money. It will take a long time until they are able to get back up again.

At these times, the words of Mr. Francisco Colayco strongly reverberates: the quickest way to get rich is to GET RICH SLOW! If one does not accept this fact, then one will continue to fall prey to the hundreds of false “opportunities” around And the only way to distinguish an authentic wealth vehicle from a false one is summarized in two words: FINANCIAL LITERACY! Only with the right and timely information can you guard and grow your wealth properly, and not become a victim of financial scams.

“Nang Magising si Juan” Episode 11 Sneak Peek

Ariel, in Nang Magising si Juan last July 20, was feeling insecure about his not accomplishing much in his financial life. Together with his friend, Long Mejia, he tried to think up of businesses but because of other commitments, Long Mejia leaves Ariel on his own. Ariel decided to sell chickens because he loves to eat chicken and his best brand is Bounty Fresh Chicken, Chooks-to-Go. He bought frozen chicken from Bounty Chicken and started selling them house-to-house and store-to store. However, his selling was unplanned. He even ate some of the chicken that he was supposed to sell. He realized that he didn’t like that particular business because it was not a business that he really liked He realized that he could not go on without asking for advice.

He approached Armand Bengco, Executive Director of Colayco Foundation to help him. Armand explained to Ariel the basic concepts of setting up a business.

After hearing the suggestions, Ariel asks Armand Bengco if he would like to be a partner in his business by putting in money. Of course, Armand knows better. You should not agree to being a partner and especially not putting in money into a business that your partner has obviously no expertise in.

On Sunday, July 27, join Ariel again on Nang Magising Si Juan as he continues to try to set up a business. Ariel continues to believe that his talent is in show business.Ariel joins Chooks-To-Go’s Kwela Van road show to impress the brand’s marketing head and consider him as their newest endorser.

We have sponsors for the show like Bulgar, Bounty Fresh Chicken Chooks-to-Go, Mang Inasal and LandBank of the Philippines. With them, we are able to give all Filipinos information while watching an enjoyable comedy show. Please pass the word to your family and friends.
