“Nang Magising si Juan” Episode 13 Sneak Peek

While there are some improvements in Ariel’s financial education on Nang Magising Si Juan, there is still a lot to ask for.  In last week’s episode, Ariel ended up staying in a hotel because his electricity, water and telephone were cut off because he was unable to pay his bills.  Ariel is not as poor as not to find money for his electricity but he is not careful.  He forgot to pay the bills because he was too busy.  I had to remind Ariel that he can pay for his bills even by cellphone. Now he has to use his credit card to pay for his hotel bill and that adds up to his expenses.  Ariel didn’t even realize he was staying in aurumOne Makati Hotel that I own together with OFWs and members of KsKCoop.

At least, he remembered that he had to arrange for an interview with Ms. Yasly Corazon Jaen, Chief Admin Officer of Governance Commission for GOCC of LandBank Mobile Availer.  He learned that it is easy to get a salary loan. When you avail of a loan, you should have a mobile phone because you apply by text and you get the approval also by text within three days and the money is deposited to your account with Land Bank.

Tomorrow Aug. 10, watch the Ariel and the members of KsKCoop as they meet up in Hong Kong to discuss the projects of KsK.  We have sponsors for the show like Bulgar, Bounty Fresh Chicken Chooks-to-Go, Mang Inasal and LandBank of the Philippines.  With them, we are able to give all Filipinos information while watching an enjoyable comedy show.  Please pass the word to your family and friends.

“Nang Magising si Juan” Episode 12 Sneak Peek

Ariel, in Nang Magising si Juan last July 27, continues to believe that his real talent is in show business.  He looks for ways and means to support his feeling and he joins the Chooks-to-go caravan.  This is actually a good move on his part to understand his real passion.  This is what we should all do to really discover if what we believe to be our capability is really true.

In joining the caravan, Ariel got himself into the groove of all the fun that Chooks-to-go caravan had to offer.  He went to the extent of being personally involved in the activities, which was again very good to enlighten him. He was convinced that it was really his calling to be in the limelight and he made up his mind that he would be a good endorser of Chooks to go.

He thought he should resign from his job with Feeling Close with FJCshow and maybe even his job with PLDT.  He went to me first to resign and tell me about his plans. I was surprised and kept asking him if he already had a signed contract.  He was evasive and didn’t really confirm, but he was so sure he wanted to resign, so I accepted.

When Ariel went back to Chooks-to-go, he was shocked to learn that they already had a poster of their endorser.  He didn’t even know!

Tomorrow, Aug 3 at 8am on GMA News TV, join Ariel again when he is seriously unable to pay his bills.  On Nang Magising Si Juan, learn more about possible solutions especially regarding the mobile salary option of Land Bank.

“Nang Magising si Juan” Episode 11 Sneak Peek

Ariel, in Nang Magising si Juan last July 20, was feeling insecure about his not accomplishing much in his financial life. Together with his friend, Long Mejia, he tried to think up of businesses but because of other commitments, Long Mejia leaves Ariel on his own. Ariel decided to sell chickens because he loves to eat chicken and his best brand is Bounty Fresh Chicken, Chooks-to-Go. He bought frozen chicken from Bounty Chicken and started selling them house-to-house and store-to store. However, his selling was unplanned. He even ate some of the chicken that he was supposed to sell. He realized that he didn’t like that particular business because it was not a business that he really liked He realized that he could not go on without asking for advice.

He approached Armand Bengco, Executive Director of Colayco Foundation to help him. Armand explained to Ariel the basic concepts of setting up a business.

After hearing the suggestions, Ariel asks Armand Bengco if he would like to be a partner in his business by putting in money. Of course, Armand knows better. You should not agree to being a partner and especially not putting in money into a business that your partner has obviously no expertise in.

On Sunday, July 27, join Ariel again on Nang Magising Si Juan as he continues to try to set up a business. Ariel continues to believe that his talent is in show business.Ariel joins Chooks-To-Go’s Kwela Van road show to impress the brand’s marketing head and consider him as their newest endorser.

We have sponsors for the show like Bulgar, Bounty Fresh Chicken Chooks-to-Go, Mang Inasal and LandBank of the Philippines. With them, we are able to give all Filipinos information while watching an enjoyable comedy show. Please pass the word to your family and friends.

“Nang Magising si Juan” Episode 10 Sneak Peek

Last Sunday, Ariel returned to LandBank to open his Unit Investment Trust Fund (UITF) account assisted by Ms. Vangie Illustrisimo, Trust Sales and Marketing Officer.  Armand Bengco, our Executive Director at Colayco Foundation also gave him some advice on how to deal with his personal debt.  With a minimum of Php10k, Ariel was able to buy shares in a UITF.

Again, there are different types of UITF depending on your ability to take risks.  UITF have no guarantees but it is unlikely that you will lose your investment if you keep it over the long term.  The market price of UITF shares goes up and down.  Your gains or losses on your investment will only happen when you sell your shares.  You have to sell at a price higher than your average purchase price.  If you sell at a price lower than your average purchase price, purchase price, you can lose money.  The risk is really your ability to hold on to your investment until the price goes up.

Tomorrow July 20, Ariel will be involved in trying to put up a business.  As usual, he will do what he wants without much preparation and make his mistakes.  Eventually, he will realize those mistakes and have a good learning experience.

Nang Magising si Juan Episode 9 Sneak Peek

by: Francisco J. Colayco

Last Sunday, Ariel and I interviewed Landbank’s Vice President Mr. Josefino “Joji” Cerin to find out what options there are for retirees in Landbank. It was a most interesting exchange of ideas for medium level investors. In summary, Mr. Cerin clarified the various options particularly Unit Investment Trust Fund (UITF) with a minimum requirement of Php10k. There is a good possibility of making money especially over the medium to long term of 3-5 years. However, losses are also possible if you sell at the wrong time but it is unlikely to end up with a complete loss of your investment. Ariel was not interested in the interview because he was uncomfortable when he could not understand. That was a bad attitude but I cannot force anyone to learn if they are not interested.

In another situation, Ariel had the right idea of trying to use his assets to earn him some income. Of course, because of his unthinking ways, it was not the best business, but at least he was trying, in converting his garage into a dancing place for senior citizens. Unfortunately, one of the senior citizens collapsed while dancing. She did not want to go to the hospital because she did not have any savings or insurance to pay for the medical expenses. Ariel with his good heart tried to help her but his funds are limited as well. The lady who fainted advised Ariel to prepare for his future.

On Sunday, July 13, Ariel and I will return to Landbank to ask for more products and options for each Filipino to grow their wealth. It will be a very interesting meeting where you will learn more about bank products that can give you better returns on your money than just leaving your savings in a savings account.

Manggigising Na!

Airing on GMA News TV, Sundays 8:00AM beginning May 18, 2014

“Nang Magising Si Juan” is not your ordinary financial literacy program. This comedy-reality show is set to educate, relate, entertain and inspire by tackling common money issues every Filipino can relate to. This show not only teaches practical and doable financial management, but also promotes positive values and corrects wrong mindsets in and beyond the topic of money.

The driving point of the whole show is this: Beyond the how-to, it’s the essence, the core principles and the right attitude applied that can truly make a difference.

To further emphasize the importance of practical application of principles, this show features a social experiment on the show’s main character. The goal is to enlighten him and improve his financial situation. As a relatable character, the show aims to inspire the audience and send them the message, “Kung kaya niya, kakayanin niyo rin.”

“Nang Magising si Juan” is named as such because it directly reflects the perceptions, attitudes and habits of Filipinos and tries to serve as a wake-up call.  On the other side of the coin, this show also reinforces the value of getting up and actually doing something to achieve one’s personal goals and dreams.

The main character is Ariel Villasanta, a real-life comedian who got his share of the limelight and extravagant living but is now struggling with debt.  Refusing to come to terms with reality, he projects a flamboyant image and lives in a big house, but with no electricity. (To which he puts a signage on his gate for all his neighbors to see: “Support Earth Hour Every day!”)

His anxiety about his finances urges him to talk to the financial guru in the show he writes in, “Feeling Close with FJC”.  This show-within-a-show is a parody of a typical business & finance  show: stiff sofas, big potted plants, tacky background design and lounge music playing. This will be used as a platform to deliver the financial principles and techniques that Ariel will process throughout the show.  The show’s star, real-life award-winning financial guru Mr. Colayco, a wise but brutally frank man, corrects Ariel’s wrong perspectives and pushes him to change with challenging questions.

Along with other characters (played by non-actors), Ariel encounters different financial issues that plague the common Pinoy. Mr. Colayco gives practical advice and techniques in layman’s terms. Ariel puts some of it to practice, some he willfully ignores to do his own “diskarte”(not without amusing consequences of course).

In his journey to financial literacy and freedom, Ariel discovers that there’s more to managing wealth than just accumulating money and becoming rich. He also learns the values of self-discipline, hard work and even self-worth and generosity that improve his quality of life in a way more than money can.
